Why Newgrounds? GobSmacked interview

Today’s featured Why Newgrounds? creator is GobSmacked!

What do you create? Art, cartoons, music, games, etc?
I produce dubstep and heavy bass electronic music

What inspires you to create?
My biggest inspiration is things I see in my every day life and how I feel. I try to translate things I feel and see in my music and that kinda fulfills me to do so :3

I also try to get better and better with every new song to see how good I can actually become and where my limits are actually, kinda like the challenge you know.

How do you keep yourself motivated? Do you work in short bursts of inspiration or do you have a daily routine?
I work daily on things usually like 3 projects and whenever I feel like I have an idea or something I just try to translate that into one of the projects. It takes ages for me to finish a song though. After the first drop or whatever I often hit a wall and don’t know how to continue but eventually ideas come.

What do you do when you hit a creative block?
To be quite honest I just kinda wait. It’s not like I gotta do stuff, I work on something and when I lose interest or hit a wall I just kinda “freeze” the whole project and move on till I have ideas for that project!

How do you deal with trolls online and in real life?
I get bullied in real life a lot actually but I don’t really care about this. Online I care even less. Frankly, trolling can be quite funny when done correctly XD

Have you ever created something you thought turned out pretty bad but then when you posted it online everyone else liked it more than your favorite creations? Why do you think that happens?
Yes actually twice. I don’t really know why though. Maybe it was just me not really liking the result cuz of course the composer of a song is always the harshest critic haha.

Has rejection ever affected your creative process?
Yeah. Really dragged me down several times. Especially when labels don’t respond.

What is the best advice you ever received?
A friend of mine once said I should learn music theory and use ableton. Another friend helped me get mixing and stuff right and basically taught me everything I know about mixing. Best two pieces of advice I ever got hahaha. Upped my production. Love ya David and Bas :3

What do you do when you’re not creating or posting on Newgrounds? Do you have a job? Are you a student?
I’m currently in my last year of high school. After that I’m going to study physics and math.

What does the internet mean to you?
The internet is an amazing place. You can share stuff, find stuff, learn stuff. I dunno man it’s just a great thing to be honest.

Why Newgrounds?
Well actually I knew Newgrounds for a few years cuz of online flash games and stuff and when I found out I could upload audio on there I created an account and just started uploading!

What is your favorite accomplishment? Post a link if it’s available online!
It’s a super secret Work in Progress but I swear it’s by far my best! 😉 Maybe gonna release it November or later October!

Do you enjoy sharing your work with others or do you prefer to go unnoticed? Why?
I mean I’m super happy if people tell me they actually enjoy my music haha. Always makes my day. But I’d prefer not being super popular or something cuz you know having a private life is great.

What do you wish to accomplish with your art? Is it a hobby or do you plan on making it a career?
I mean it’s a hobby at the moment and I’ll probably never get so good that I can live from it soooo yeah.

Do you ever feel that you have to censor your creativity because you don’t want to offend anyone?
I produce dubstep so meh. I definitely don’t feel silenced or something!

Do you have your own “style” or do you just make whatever feels right at the time?
Currently I’m trying to develop my own style and some fellow producers tell me I already have a certain feel to my music but I’m not too sure yet. I definitely wanna get more crazy with my stuff so I’m not blending in too much with all the normie music hahaha.

Do you believe it’s important to get good reviews and have lots of followers or is just doing what you love to do enough to justify your work?
To be honest I don’t really know. Obviously having a huge amount of followers and good reviews is a good sign so I guess you aren’t doing anything wrong. But I mean I’d never start to produce things I don’t like just cuz people tell me to, that’s for sure.

Do you ever find yourself limited by the materials that you have available?
Nah, my equipment is quite ok. All the work is in your head anyways. As long as you have a great idea it will sound great, even if you produce it on a toaster with 3xOsc only. If you know what you are doing you don’t need all of these fancy plugins and expensive hardware.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?
Don’t give up, you’ll get there man! Just do what you feel like doing and experiment a lot.

Where can we find out more about your work? Post links to your Newgrounds page, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, website, or anywhere else we can find you on the web!
