Write your own adventures!

The Crypt Shyfter universe is overflowing with adventures and stories waiting to be told. Why not join in the fun?

There are a few ways you can get involved in creating new Crypt Shyfter stories:

1. Write your own adventures!

If you want to write your own Crypt Shyfter adventures, visit twinery.org and get writing! Twine is a free web application that allows you to create your own text adventure games. All of the Crypt Shyfter adventures to date have been created in Twine, and I’m a huge advocate of using Twine to create your own games.

If you need help creating your Twine adventures, I have a brief tutorial that you can read here. I also strongly recommend searching the Twine and Reddit forums if you have specific questions about coding things in Twine. I am by no means a master so I probably won’t be able to answer most of your questions if you’re doing anything complicated, but there’s a good chance you’ll be able to find the answers you’re looking for on one of these sites.

If you need some motivation and encouragement, join the Crypt Shyfter Discord channel! Aside from playing the occasional RPGs on weekends, this is a place where other kung fu space barbarians are creating and sharing their own works in progress. The Discord channel is a great place to give and receive feedback on your current game or to discuss ideas and techniques for creating exciting adventures.

Once you’ve finished your game, upload it to Newgrounds or Philome.la and send me a link! I will feature your games right here on my site alongside all the other Crypt Shyfter “Legacy” adventures.

If you go this route, you will have total control over the direction your game takes. My only involvement is to share your game on my site, giving you 100% freedom to do whatever you want.

2. Submit a short story – PAID

If you aren’t interested in learning programming or fiddling around with Twine, but you still want to contribute an exciting story to the growing Crypt Shyfter universe, this is the path for you!

Submission Guidelines:

  • Stories must be a minimum of 5,000 words in length. There is no maximum limit
  • All stories should be written in second person narrative: You open the door; you battle the dragon; you hear the sound of approaching footsteps.
  • Your adventure must be a complete story with a beginning, a middle, and an ending. Cliffhangers are acceptable, but ambiguous endings are not. Following the 3-act structure or mythic structure is preferred and increases your chances of acceptance. Be sure to resolve all conflicts and tie up all loose threads by the end!
  • Your adventures should include lots of action and drama!
  • Bonus points for compelling side characters, moral dilemmas, comedy, bad puns, and romance!
  • You can add choices to your stories, but do not include these choice branches in the word count. I am looking for one solid storyline from beginning to end that is at least 5,000 words. Don’t submit a 3,000 word adventure with 2,000 words worth of choices.

If I accept your story, I will edit it and convert it into a full official adventure, complete with choices and branching pathways. Your adventure will be packaged with cover art and appear on the main games page. Credits will say “Written by Kung Fu Space Barbarian & YOU.”

I can pay $25 for all short stories, regardless of length. This token payment is non-negotiable. Submission does not guarantee acceptance. All submissions should be well edited and include proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will not be accepted, as it creates more work for me to fix your mistakes.

3. Write an official Crypt Shyfter adventure – PAID

If you are really ambitious, contact me about writing a complete adventure and I will send you an outline to get you started. Your adventure will be packaged with cover art and appear on the main games page.

Submission guidelines

  • Message me prior to writing in order to discuss a story outline
  • All adventures must be written in Twine
  • Your adventure must be a minimum of 15,000 words according to the Twine word count. I will accept longer adventures, but I will not take anything less than 15,000 words
  • All stories should be written in second person narrative: You open the door; you battle the dragon; you hear the sound of approaching footsteps.
  • Your adventure must be a complete story with a beginning, a middle, and an ending (preferably multiple endings). Cliffhangers are acceptable, but ambiguous endings are not. Either kill off the hero or resolve the story in a satisfying manner. Following the 3-act structure or mythic structure is preferred. Be sure to resolve all conflicts and tie up all loose threads by the end!
  • Your adventures should include lots of action and drama!
  • Bonus points for compelling side characters, moral dilemmas, comedy, bad puns, and romance!

Upon acceptance, I will act as editor to adjust adventures as necessary. I may change entire scenes, re-work characters, or add alternate pathways in order to fit the story more completely within the Crypt Shyfter universe.

I can pay $50 for all adventures, regardless of length. This token payment is non-negotiable. Submitting a short story is probably a better deal for you time-to-money-wise, but if you wanna write a full adventure then go for it.  All submissions should be well edited and include proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
